TAXATION

The tax laws of this country are very complicated, and if recent Finance Act is anything to go by this complexity will not abate but increase. Indeed the increasing complexity of the Pakistan tax system is such that it is in grave danger of collapsing.

It is therefore, more important than ever before to take advice on tax issues before embarking on any important transaction, whether this be the execution of a lease agreement, the designing of a factory, the arrangement of a remuneration package, the royalty agreement with the overseas partner or the arrangement to transfer assets under the scheme of merger and acquisition.

All too often insufficient attention is paid to the tax aspects of transaction. Whilst the tax tail should not wag the proverbial dog, as the government can and does take a substantial part of a company’s profits in tax it is the duty of company directors and accountants to maximize post tax profits by legitimate methods of tax planning.
